The University of Haifa has recently secured three competitive grants from the Israel Innovation Authority, totaling approximately NIS 3 million. Combined with the University’s own investment, these initiatives represent an overall commitment of nearly NIS 6 million to advancing high-tech training, innovation, and inclusive growth, particularly within Arab society.
The grants support three complementary programs that reflect the University of Haifa’s distinctive approach to innovation: bridging academic research, entrepreneurship, industry collaboration, and societal impact.
1. Bio-Convergence Venture Incubation Program
The Bio-Convergence Venture Incubation Program at the University of Haifa is designed to accelerate environmentally focused innovation by bringing together life sciences, marine and agricultural research, and advanced digital technologies. The program reflects the University’s commitment to developing sustainable solutions for some of the most pressing environmental challenges facing marine and coastal ecosystems.
Jointly led by the Leon H. Charney School of Marine Sciences and Haifa Innovation Labs (HIL), in collaboration with the Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences, the one-year program operates with a total budget of NIS 700,000 and is supported by partners from industry and the innovation ecosystem.
The program incubates up to eight early-stage ventures that apply bio-convergence approaches—integrating biological systems with data science, artificial intelligence, and computational tools—to develop solutions in areas such as sustainable aquaculture, marine environmental monitoring, climate resilience, biodiversity protection and responsible use of marine resources.
Participants benefit from close engagement with researchers, industry experts, and environmental stakeholders, gaining access to scientific infrastructure, field-based knowledge and entrepreneurial mentorship. By transforming academic research into scalable technologies and ventures, the program bridges science, sustainability and entrepreneurship, supporting the transition toward environmentally responsible innovation.
Through this initiative, the University of Haifa strengthens its role as a hub for environmental innovation, translating cutting-edge research into practical solutions that contribute to the protection of natural ecosystems and the long-term sustainability of marine and coastal environments in Israel and beyond.
2. BridgeTech – Pathways to High-Tech Employment
A three-year initiative led by the Office of the Rector, BridgeTech is designed to train and integrate students from the Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences into the high-tech workforce, with a strong emphasis on Arab students. With a budget of nearly NIS 3 million, the program provides professional training, industry exposure and direct employment pathways – strengthening diversity and inclusion within Israel’s innovation ecosystem.
3. Challenge to Innovation – Advancing Healthcare Solutions
Led by Haifa Innovation Labs (HIL) in partnership with Clalit Health Services, this three-year program (NIS 1.8 million) brings together graduate students from across disciplines and healthcare professionals to develop innovative solutions to pressing challenges in Israel’s healthcare system. The program fosters applied innovation with real-world impact, connecting academic insight with frontline medical needs.
