A groundbreaking collaboration between the University of Haifa and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems led to a world-first discovery: the digital reconstruction of a 1,500-year-old Byzantine chisel recovered from a shipwreck off the coast of Dor, Israel. Using advanced micro-CT imaging technology originally developed for defense applications, researchers were able to reveal the tool’s original structure without damaging the fragile remains.

The discovery was made during an underwater excavation led by Prof. Debbie Cvikel, with the involvement of students from the University’s maritime archaeology programs, reflecting its commitment to hands-on, interdisciplinary education. The research offers new insights into ship maintenance, maritime trade, and everyday life aboard Byzantine vessels.

This collaboration highlights how cutting-edge security technologies can generate significant civilian, cultural, and scientific impact. By connecting archaeology, engineering, and industry, the University of Haifa continues to expand the boundaries of innovation and cross-sector partnerships.

The discovery gained international attention, including coverage on Ynet Global.
